“Being selected for something like this, it’s like being told that what you are doing matters and you belong to this conversation.”
Introducing Dr. Carina Vieira, a researcher at the Pharmaceutical Sciences department at the University of Porto. Carina will join hundreds of promising early-career scientists at the 75th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting taking place from 28 June to 3 July in Germany.
Selected as one of this year’s Young Scientists and sponsored by BBMRI-ERIC, she will spend a week exchanging ideas with Nobel Laureates and fellow researchers from around the world. It is an opportunity that recognises the work she is doing as an emerging researcher.
Carina’s research focuses on the development of innovative laboratory tools to study human drug metabolism. Through this work, she hopes to advance more efficient and sustainable methods for developing new medicines.
In today’s BBMRI-ERIC podcast episode, Carina discusses her work, reflects on her journey so far and talks about the challenges and opportunities facing young researchers today.
For Carina, one of the most exciting aspects of the Lindau Meeting is the opportunity to broaden her perspective and connect with others beyond her own field.
“When you are doing a PhD, your world can be easily just that, and it is easy to forget about what matters in the big picture. So, I want to see and learn the scale of what science can be when people are bold enough to ask the right questions”
The Meeting is just one milestone in a career driven by curiosity. Rather than pursuing a more traditional pharmaceutical path, Carina was drawn to research by the opportunity to contribute new knowledge and investigate unanswered questions.
Like many young scientists, she has encountered challenges along the way. Competition for funding, short-term contracts and the pressure to produce meaningful results can be demanding. Her advice for aspiring scientists? Stay curious, admit when you don’t know something, build connections and nurture relationships.
BBMRI-ERIC is proud to support Carina’s participation and looks forward to following the next stages of her scientific career.
This year, #LINO75 will welcome around 600 promising Young Scientists and 70 Nobel Laureates from across the globe to celebrate interdisciplinarity.
