BBMRI-ERIC announces renewed support of the next generation of scientists

This article is 688 words, and a four-minute read.

The 74th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting takes place from 29 June to 4 July in Germany and is focused on Chemistry. The thematic Lindau meetings present a unique opportunity to encourage young scientists to explore the future of science through international discussion and collaboration. The are also a chance to promote the use of biobanking and biomolecular resources for innovative research in health.

BBMRI-ERIC has chosen to sponsor two young scientists from its member states whose work connects chemistry with medical research. By supporting their attendance at the 74th Lindau Meeting, we aim to highlight the importance of emerging talent for driving future scientific breakthroughs.

Prof. Jens K. Habermann, BBMRI-ERIC Director General, explained:

“BBMRI-ERIC, together with our National Nodes and Biobanks, continues to encourage young scientists to explore the value of biobanking through onsite visits and collaborative events.

“Supporting these young scientists at the 74th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting reflects our commitment to fostering the next generation of scientific talent. It also highlights the essential role biobanks play as active partners in driving innovation and research efforts.”

Introducing the future of health research

BBMRI-ERIC is pleased to introduce the two supported young scientists who come from members states and share research interests of relevance to our community.

Jan Chasák, Palacký University, Czech Republic

Jan Chasák is a third-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Organic Chemistry at Palacký University in Olomouc, specialising in medicinal chemistry. His research primarily focuses on the development of new antituberculosis agents through the synthesis and biological evaluation of small molecules. Additionally, Jan has investigated compounds with activity against other infectious diseases, including Leishmania and Trypanosoma species.

As part of this work, he has developed novel synthetic strategies – both in solution and on solid phase – designed to facilitate the preparation of biologically active compounds. He is particularly interested in the ways chemical approaches can address medical challenges and values opportunities for collaboration, interdisciplinary learning, and the exchange of ideas.

“Participating in this event is both a personal privilege and a professional milestone. It offers a rare opportunity to exchange ideas with others who share the same curiosity, commitment, and willingness to work hard in pursuit of scientific progress.

“I believe that such connections can spark collaborations and insights that extend well beyond a single meeting. For me, science has always been about learning and sharing, and this experience is a chance to do both in a truly meaningful way. I also hope to find inspiration from others on how to build a successful scientific career while staying true to personal values and finding space for family and life outside the lab.”

Erik Dimitrov, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgaria

Erik Dimitrov, 25, is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the Institute of Polymers, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He holds a master’s degree in medicine and is deeply interested in macromolecular engineering with biomedical applications. His work focuses on the design and development of advanced polymer-based nanocarriers for drug and gene delivery.

“Participating in the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting is a truly unique opportunity for me - both personally and professionally. It will allow me to connect with outstanding young scientists from all across the globe, fostering meaningful interactions that could grow into lasting collaborations and knowledge exchange.

“In addition, I will be able to get inspired by some of the greatest scientists of our time and see what is needed to follow in their steps. I hope to gain insights that cannot be found in textbooks – lessons drawn from lived experience – and to apply them in my field to both strengthen my own scientific journey and contribute to the advancement of biomedical polymer research at my home institution.”

About the meeting

The 74th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (Chemistry) takes place every year but with a different scientific focus. #LINO25 welcomes around 35 Nobel Laureates in Lindau. They will exchange ideas with more than 600 Young Scientists from all over the world to engage in fruitful discussions and inspiring encounters.
