March 2026 milestone update:
Under the EvolveBBMRI project WP2 tasks, the Green Incentive concept has been launched. This concept is being developed to encourage BBMRI biobanks to adopt an environmentally friendly approach in their daily biobanking practices.
This task will:
- Define the Green Incentive criteria to assess which biobanks will be eligible and how to comply with specific relevant standards within a specific time frame. The defined criteria could include various measures on sustainability such as energy efficiency, waste management and sustainable procurement for all biobanking practices and procedures.
- Set-up a Green Incentive process with a defined set of procedures and timeline e.g. application, review and rating process where the biobanks would be assessed on their compliance with the criteria outlined above.
- Monitor biobanks on regular basis to ensure compliance. The monitoring process could be in the form of regular audits or submission of annual reports.
The Green-Label will be awarded to those biobanks fulfilling the Green Incentive process. We believe that this process will encourage sustainable, environmentally friendly implementation for the future. This task will deliver feedback on the Green Incentive process at the end of the project timeline (December 2026). Updates will be shared on the BBMRI-ERIC website.
