The Federated Search Task Force is a key initiative within the BBMRI-ERIC infrastructure, supporting the development and implementation of the Federated Platform—a vendor-neutral, standards-based ecosystem designed to enable seamless interoperability across European biobanks.
This Task Force plays a central role in advancing federated search capabilities, allowing researchers to query distributed biobank data without centralising sensitive information. By leveraging a hierarchical model, the platform supports data discovery and analysis at multiple levels—biobank, national node, and BBMRI-ERIC central services.
The Task Force organises technical and informative sessions for national nodes and biobanks, following a “train-the-trainers” approach to ensure sustainable knowledge transfer and local capacity building. These efforts are crucial for enabling biobanks to connect to the platform, maintain local components, and align with BBMRI-ERIC’s data protection and interoperability standards.
Through its work, the Federated Search Task Force contributes to broader European initiatives such as the European Health Data Space and Mission Cancer, reinforcing BBMRI-ERIC’s commitment to making high-quality, findable, and ethically governed biomedical data accessible for research.
