The Swiss Center for Musculoskeletal Biobanking (SCMB) has achieved the BBMRI‑ERIC Quality Label, recognising the biobank’s strong commitment to quality, harmonisation and excellence in support of biomedical research.
Achieving the BBMRI-ERIC Audited Quality Label was an important milestone for SCMB and a valuable opportunity to further strengthen the quality management system. The preparation process involved a comprehensive review of procedures, documentation and operational practices to ensure alignment with BBMRI-ERIC quality requirements and international biobanking standards.
The audit experience was highly constructive and provided an external perspective on the quality framework. It highlighted areas of strength while also offering valuable recommendations for continuous improvement. The process encouraged cross-functional collaboration within the biobank and reinforced a culture of quality and transparency across all activities.
One of the key learnings from the journey was the importance of maintaining quality as an ongoing process rather than a one-time achievement. The audit helped the biobank identifyopportunities to further optimise workflows, enhance documentation practices and strengthen staff engagement in quality-related activities. SCMB views the Quality Label not only as recognition of our current standards but also as a commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in biobanking.
Commenting the achievement, Suzana Petkovic, Quality Manager of Swiss Center for Musculoskeletal Biobanking (SCMB) shares:
“The BBMRI-ERIC audit process was an excellent opportunity to evaluate and strengthen our quality practices. Achieving the Quality Label validates the dedication of our team and our commitment to providing high-quality biospecimens and data that support innovative research in musculoskeletal diseases. We see this recognition as both an achievement and a motivation for continuous improvement.”
Andrea Wutte, Head of Quality Management at BBMRI-ERIC, highlights:
“The SCMB team has demonstrated that quality is not achieved through a single audit, but through a continuous commitment to improvement. Their willingness to reflect on existing practices and identify opportunities for further development is at the heart of a strong quality culture.”
By obtaining the BBMRI-ERIC Quality Label, the SCMB biobank joins a growing number of biobanks across Europe that maintain high standards in biobanking and quality management, reinforcing trust in biological resources used for research.
