SUMMARY:European Biobank Week Roadshow - Paediatric Biobanking and Minor Engagement - Rome\, Italy
DESCRIPTION:Paediatric Biobanking and Minor Engagement – an interactive workshop\nThe second stop of our EBW22 Roadshow will be in Rome (Italy)\, 13-14 October. \nESBB and BBMRI-ERIC organise this #EBW22 Roadshow stop in partnership with the BBMRI ERIC Stakeholder Forum Patient Pillar\, BBMRI.it\, the Research Translational (IRCCS) Paediatric Bambino Gesù Hospital\, and the paediatric network IDEA. \nPaediatric (research) biobanking is a European priority asking for a scientific and Ethical-Legal-Societal-ELS shift within a Responsible Research & Innovation – RRI framework. Accordingly\, our critical starting point will be an overall view of European commitment to paediatric research and healthcare and an in-depth exchange on good practices and priorities of various actors to raise awareness\, facilitate assent and consenting processes\, and improve engagement. Promoting practical solutions\, we will address challenges of biobanking with children (earlier\, over time\, and following up)\, such as: \n\nHow empowering new generations makes better research and a better research experience?\nWhich tools to use to inform and increase the minor’s understanding?\nBy whom is the child’s capacity (to understand\, to assent) assessed?\nHow to engage minors and their parents (guardians) over time and recognize them as active research participants?\n\n\nBooking and further information\nSee the programme and register via the ESBB website today\, seats are limited! \nAs a practical recommendation: October is the high tourist season in Rome; book in advance – the sooner the better. \nYou will find the information notice specific to the data processing for the organization of the EBW Roadshow here. \nPlease also find our privacy statements here: ESBB\, BBMRI-ERIC. For more information on the Eventbrite Privacy Statement click here. \n\nYou will find the information notice specific to the data processing for the organization of the EBW Roadshow here.

SUMMARY:Ethics of AI in Imaging: Ethical and Societal Implications
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Melanie Goisauf and Mónica Cano Abadía (BBMRI-ERIC) \nArtificial Intelligence (AI) applications in medicine are hoped to improve healthcare and to advance health equity. While the technology carries the potential to improve health services\, the ethical and societal implications need to be carefully considered to avoid harmful consequences for individuals and groups\, especially for the most vulnerable. It is therefore inevitable to identify what types of ethical issues are raised by AI\, and to analyse how these issues are tackled in biomedical research. This webinar gives an overview of the results of a comprehensive and systematic review of academic literature as well as workshop outcomes. We will problematise approaches such as ‘trustworthy AI’ and ‘explainable AI’ that shape the ethics discourse on AI. The webinar concludes with a reflection on the topics identified that shape the understanding of ‘Ethics of AI’ and the gaps in the discourse.  \nRegister here: https://cesnet.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_u_wq99pSTfm7Ql3PfXdnFQ \nThis webinar is funded within BIG PICTURE\, projects that have received funding from the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 Joint Undertaking under grant agreement No 945358.

SUMMARY:BBMRI-ERIC ELSI Dialogues Webinar: Introduction to the Belgian Biobank Legislation - A Piece of the Puzzle in the Complicated EU Regulatory Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Biobank legislation is not harmonised at the European Union level\, and the Member States have taken considerably divergent approaches in how they regulate the field. Whereas some countries do not have specific regulations\, others have adopted complex biobank laws. \nThis webinar aims to present the unique legal framework for biobanking that is currently in place in Belgium. The Belgian Biobank law was first adopted in 2008\, entered into force in 2018 and underwent an important reform in 2022. Moreover\, the law is complemented by an essential piece of self-regulation\, namely the Compendium on biobanks issued by the Federal Agency on Medicine Products and Health. The interplay with relevant data protection rules will also be the focus of our discussion. \nJoin us on 31 May at 14:00 CEST. Register online. \n\nModerator: Ilaria Colussi  \n\n\nSpeakers: Janos Meszaros\, Teodora Lalova-Spinks\, Introduction by Prof. Isabelle Huys  \n\nThis webinar has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the project canSERV – providing cutting edge cancer research services across Europe (grant agreement number 101058620). \n

SUMMARY:BBMRI-ERIC ELSI Dialogues Webinar: Organoids: Scientific\, ethical and regulatory aspects
DESCRIPTION:Organoids are defined as three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems that can be called “mini-organs” as they mimic some of the key multicellular\, anatomical and even functional characteristics of real organs. Organoids are praised as a substitute for animal models in preclinical studies. At the same time\, organoid technology raises issues around informed consent or privacy of donors. \nThis panel discussion features multidisciplinary experts discussing ethical\, regulatory\, and scientific aspects of organoid technology. Following a brief introduction in organoid research\, a special focus will be placed on biobanking from the patient perspective. The panellists will discuss trust\, trustworthiness\, therapeutic misconception\, and the need for regulation. They will also challenge definitions and the consequences of terminology such as ‘donation’ and ‘mini-organ’. \nJoin us on 31 October at 15:00 CEST. Register online. \nModerator: Melanie Goisauf \nSpeakers: Zisis Kozlakidis\, María Berdasco Menéndez\, Signe Mežinska\, and Mike Lensink \nAccess to Detailed Speaker Profiles \n  \nThis webinar is a collaborative effort between the ELSI Services & Research Department and the Stakeholder Forum Patient Pillar of BBMRI-ERIC. \n

SUMMARY:Biobanking Development Webinar: Cost recovery model in biobanking
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is dedicated to explaining the cost recovery model that biobanks/biobankers can use to calculate the costs associated with sample and data provision in order to stay sustainable. This model is currently being implemented in two EU projects; namely ISIDORE and CanSERV. \nWithin public biobanks\, there is no universally acknowledged model for charge/fee calculation for sample and/or data provision. The cost of access varies among countries due to labour expenses and is heavily influenced by the nature and complexity of the collection (i.e.\, population-based collection vs. specialised collection of unique samples). Considering this\, a general cost recovery model has been developed for the calculation of cost depending on the complexity of the request. This may entail that some complex requests would require a more precise calculation to determine whether access to clinical samples and associated data could involves additional costs or is less complicated and allows for reduced costs. This cost recovery model is based on the previous guidelines and calculation grid for biobanks published by Clément et al.\, 2014 (Clément et al.\, 2014). \nJoin us on 2 November from 15:00 – 16:00 CET to find out more. Register online. \nModerator: Dr. Saba Abdulghani\, Head of Biobanking Development\, BBMRI-ERIC \nSpeaker: Dr. Łukasz Kozera\, Scientific Programme Manager\, Biobanking Development\, BBMRI-ERIC \nAccess to Detailed Speaker Profiles \nDetailed Agenda: \n– Welcome & Introduction \n– What is a cost-recovery model and how can biobankers use it? \n– Examples from on-going EU projects \n– Q&A

SUMMARY:Access and benefit-sharing of Genetic Resources: the Nagoya Protocol applied to biobanks
DESCRIPTION:Access and benefit-sharing of Genetic Resources: the Nagoya Protocol applied to biobanks\nThe fair and equitable sharing of benefits from genetic resources—known as Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS)—is a key principle in global research and innovation. Governed by the Nagoya Protocol\, this international framework ensures compliance and fair use of genetic material\, with 141 countries on board since its enforcement in 2014. \nFor researchers\, biobanks\, and institutions\, navigating national ABS regulations can be complex\, impacting how biological materials are accessed and exchanged. Clear guidelines are essential to streamline compliance while enabling scientific progress. \nJoin us for an insightful webinar\, where Melania Muñoz (Leibniz Institute DSMZ) will break down the Nagoya Protocol and its impact on biobanks. Josephine Uldry (Swiss Biobanking Platform) will explore the Swiss regulatory landscape\, while Dr. Christian de Guttry (Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics) will share real-world insights of the Nagoya protocol application from Swiss and pan-European research projects. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to gain practical knowledge\, expert perspectives\, and actionable strategies to navigate ABS with confidence! \nJoin us on 24 February 2025 at 10:00 CEST. \nRegister online: https://cesnet.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_3Tkkwf7US0OJlkibAwGEyg \nModerator: \nIlaria Colussi (BBMRI-ERIC) \nSpeakers: \nMelania Muñoz (Leibniz Institute DSMZ) \nJosephine Uldry (Swiss Biobanking Platform) \nChristian de Guttry (Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics) \n  \nThis webinar is a offered by the ELSI Services & Research Department at BBMRI-ERIC.
